About Red Oak
Red Oak takes its name from the creek where the first settlers of the 1850s found red oaks lining the banks, and in 1865 it became the Montgomery County seat, famously hauling the old courthouse in from Frankfort on sleds through a blizzard. The railroad's arrival in 1869 turned a village of about fifty houses into the trading hub of southwest Iowa, with flour mills, a cannery, a brickworks and handsome homes rising on the east side. In 1888 two local men sold ads around a woodcut of the new courthouse and invented the decorative art calendar, launching the Thomas D. Murphy company that ran here for more than a century. The town carries its losses in two world wars close to its heart: the 1903 brick depot is now a World War II museum, and each Memorial Day more than 1,500 flags fill Evergreen Cemetery. Today about 5,600 neighbors gather around Fountain Square, the turreted 1891 courthouse and the round 1908 Chautauqua pavilion, with shows at The Wilson and holiday open houses downtown.
