About Reinbeck
Reinbeck's story starts with a land deal: in 1853 John Roebling, the engineer who would go on to build the Brooklyn Bridge, bought more than 22,000 acres of Grundy County prairie, and part of it later passed to Adolph Methfessel, who laid out the town and gave ground for a school and churches. The name likely came from August Lusch, an early settler and the first postmaster, who needed a name for his post office and stagecoach stop and chose the German hometown he had left. Farming built the place, and Main Street still carries the everyday things a town needs, from a grocery and hardware store to a pharmacy and doctors' offices. Families spend summer days in Elmwood Park, with its ball fields, aquatic center and shelter houses, while Strohbehn Park along Blackhawk Creek keeps woods, a stocked pond and a disc golf course. Today about 1,660 people call Reinbeck home, sharing the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels, a Carnegie library, and a calendar marked by the Fourth of July, the Fall Arts Festival and Miracle on Main at Christmas.
