About Remsen
Remsen began as a railroad town: a land company tied to the Iowa Falls and Sioux City line laid out its lots in August 1876, and the place took its name from Dr. William Remsen Smith, a Sioux City doctor who owned much of the land around it and decided the world had enough towns called Smithville. German and Luxembourg families farmed the Deep Creek Valley around it, and the town incorporated in the spring of 1889. On July 4, 1936, fireworks set off a fire that swept through the business district, burning homes and buildings that held dozens of businesses, and neighboring fire crews fought it through the night. After World War II, Remsen's Luxembourg-American families put together a memorial book to raise money for relief in the old country. That heritage still shows every fall at Oktoberfest, with a craft fair at MMCRU, the Heritage Museum open, and treipen, bratwurst and kraut at Remsen St. Mary's. Today about 1,700 people live here, and the calendar fills with chamber coffees, Kids Days in June and an Olde Fashioned Christmas with Santa.
