This week in Rising City
About Rising City
Rising City began in 1878 when the Omaha and Republican Valley Railway pushed across Butler County, and it took its name from the Rising family who owned the townsite. Samuel W. Rising and his son Albert each gave forty acres of their land for the new town. The railroad depot buzzed with activity, and hotels, banks and a meat market soon filled the business blocks. The grandest was the brick Opera Block of 1892, which fire destroyed in 1923. Today about 350 neighbors live here, the grain elevators still mark the skyline, and the community library keeps the town's photographs and postcards in the state's Nebraska Memories archive.
