About Rock Valley
Rock Valley grew up in a bend of the winding Rock River in the northwest corner of Sioux County, where homesteading families like the Wilsons, Runyuns and Bellesfields staked claims in 1868 and the Bellesfield farm served as a halfway stop for stagecoaches running between Sioux City and Sioux Falls. Colonel Ira Warren and the Milwaukee Road railroad laid out the town in 1879, and Warren gave it unusually wide streets, planted shade trees and watered them himself from barrels on a horse-drawn wagon. A river mill that weathered more than one flood ground grain day and night and shipped its flour well beyond Iowa, and its old building still stands as the Purina elevator, while Warren's onetime hotel, the Warren Building, still houses local shops. For more than seventy years the Foppe Pioneer Store drew shoppers from across northwest Iowa. Today a town of about 4,000 gathers for Rally in the Valley each August, trick-or-treats along Main Street at Candy in the Valley, drives through holiday lights at Rivers Bend Campground every December, and keeps rebuilding after the June 2024 flood.
