About Rockwell City
Rockwell City was laid out in 1876 and took its name from its founders, John M. and Charlotte M. Rockwell; a year later the Calhoun County seat moved here from Lake City, and the town has been the county's crossroads ever since. After fire claimed one courthouse and railroad noise drove another across the street, the county built the limestone Classical Revival courthouse that still stands at Court and 4th, with a three-story rotunda under a stained glass skylight. Townspeople have always pitched in: a women's club started the library in a hotel reading room in 1907, won a Carnegie grant for its first building, and a century later about 150 volunteers and 35 golf carts carried the books into a new library on Main Street. Just east of town, a 1915 Marsh rainbow arch bridge that once carried U.S. 20 traffic is now a little roadside park, and the old high school holds the Calhoun County Historical Museum, which grew out of a 1902 Pioneer Club of 25 women and a filing cabinet. Today about 2,240 people call the self-styled Golden Buckle on the Corn Belt home, and every August the Sweet Corn Daze festival fills town with a parade and vendors.
