About Roland

Roland grew up around the Norwegian farm families who settled this stretch of Story County in the 1850s and 1860s. In the early 1870s they organized a Grange and opened a cooperative store, and a post office followed in 1870 with a name taken from a legendary figure of old Norway. The railroad from Marshalltown to Story City reached the town in 1881 and brought a depot and a Main Street, though the town plat waited until 1883. Early county historians marveled at how prosperous and tidy it was, with fine homes, churches and cement sidewalks, and the town voted for waterworks and electric lights. Today about 1,360 neighbors live here, and children from Roland attend Roland-Story schools, whose teams are the Norsemen.
