About Rushville
Settlers first gathered at Rush Valley, two miles north, drawn by the hay meadows along Rush Creek; when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad came through in 1885 and missed them, the merchants simply bought lots beside the tracks and moved, some opening for business in buildings that were half frame and half tent. The new village was incorporated that October, and with the county courthouse, the railroad and the Pine Ridge Reservation nearby it became the supply town for a wide stretch of northwest Nebraska; Buffalo Bill Cody even made it his base when he hired performers for his Wild West shows. Two National Register buildings anchor downtown: the 1904 Sheridan County Courthouse with its single square tower, and Dave Gourley's 1914 opera house on Second Street, now the Plains Theater. Over the years residents gave their town a ball park, a city park with an indoor pool, a golf course, a library and churches. Today about 900 people live here, the Sheridan County Historical Society keeps the 1890 Armstrong House Museum, and Lakota speakers know the town as the place where things are carried.
