About Sac City
Sac City began in 1855, when Judge Eugene Criss rolled in from Wisconsin by covered wagon looking for waterpower, built the first log cabin beside the North Raccoon River and opened a hotel, stage stop and general store; the town took its name from the Sac people who held the land, became the county seat the next year and incorporated in 1874. The county fair started east of town in 1871, and after years of lobbying the railroad finally arrived in 1878-79, with the Chicago and North Western's brick depot of 1916 still standing on North 13th Street. In 1908 residents built a tent-shaped, octagon-fronted Chautauqua auditorium in a riverside park, where families once camped for a week of lectures and music, and it is now the only building of its kind left in Iowa. Around the red-brick 1889 courthouse, Monument Square keeps General Sherman Hall and an 1894 soldiers' monument, and a few blocks away a pavilion holds a 9,370-pound popcorn ball that volunteers built in 2016. Today about 2,000 people live in this Main Street Iowa town, cheering on the East Sac County Raiders and gathering at the library on West Main and in Chautauqua Park.
