This week in Sanborn
About Sanborn
Sanborn began in 1871, when the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway pushed through northwest Iowa and a town grew up beside the tracks. It took its name from George W. Sanborn, the railroad's president, and was incorporated as a town in 1880. Today about 1,400 people live here, and the city owns its own gas, electric, water and telecommunications utilities, a point of local pride. Families gather at Miller Park, a 125-acre complex with a golf course, ball fields, playgrounds and a campground, and at the downtown park with its outdoor pool. Kids from town go to school with neighbors in the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn district, and Story Hour at the Main Street library fills the Thursday mornings.
