About Santee

Santee is the principal village of the Santee Sioux Nation (Isanti Dakota), tucked along the Missouri River in Knox County, Nebraska. In the Nation's own telling, the Santee were the 'frontier guardians of the Sioux Nation', a woodlands people of four bands who lived in Minnesota before treaties and the hard years after 1862 carried them west. After a painful exile through Crow Creek, a reservation was set aside here in northeastern Nebraska in 1863, and the village grew up around it. Missionaries opened the Santee Normal Training School in 1870, and two of its churches, the Episcopal Church of Our Most Merciful Savior and the Congregational Church and Manse, are National Register landmarks. Today the Nation runs its own government, programs, parks and businesses, with Isanti Community School and the Nebraska Indian Community College's Santee campus serving the next generation.
