About Sargent
Sargent grew from a sod-house post office that Ruth Sherman opened in 1879 and named for her friends the Sargents of Illinois. In 1883 J.K. Spacht put up the first store in the middle of a wheat field and persuaded her to move the post office inside, and future governor Ezra Savage laid out the town. Growth stalled in the 1890s, then the first train arrived in 1899 and by 1900 the town had two banks, two newspapers and two grain elevators. It peaked above 1,000 people in 1920. Today about 500 neighbors live near the Middle Loup River at the edge of the Sandhills, and visitors know the town as the Antique Capital of Nebraska.
