About Scottsbluff

Scottsbluff grew up on the north bank of the North Platte River in 1899, laid out by a Burlington Railroad land company within sight of the great bluff it is named for, and its first depot was an old boxcar parked beside the new tracks. The bluff itself was a guidepost for a quarter of a million Oregon, California and Pony Express travelers, who passed through Mitchell Pass on the far side of the river. In 1910 a sugar factory moved here from eastern Nebraska, and beet growing has shaped the valley's farms and families ever since. Today it is the largest city in the Panhandle, grown together with Gering across the river.
