About Scribner
Scribner was laid out in 1870 by Lucius D. Richards, at the point the railroad had just reached in the Elkhorn River valley, and it took its name from the New York publisher Charles Scribner. Trade along the tracks built a solid brick Main Street, where the Harder Hotel still stands at the corner of Main and Howard and the old Milligan building across the street now houses the Musbach Museum. In the winter of 1942 the Army opened a training airfield southeast of town, where bomber and fighter crews prepared for war, and the whole base was famously disguised as a farm village, with a hangar painted like a red barn, a sham church steeple and a mock silo that hid the hangar doors. Trains slowed through the 1970s, and after Elkhorn River and Pebble Creek floods damaged the line in 1982 the tracks were abandoned and finally pulled up in 1988, yet Scribner carried on as a trading town. Today about 850 people live here, gathering at the Scribner Public Library on Main Street, the Town Hall at Third and Howard that joined the National Register in 2010, and the stands for the Scribner-Snyder Trojans.
