About Seward
Seward's first Fourth of July, in 1868, drew about twenty people, the whole town, around a flagpole on the public square and a homemade stars-and-stripes banner. The town has kept the party going nearly every year since, and in 1973 the governor proclaimed it Nebraska's Fourth of July City, with a national "Small Town USA" title following in 1979. Between Independence Days, the Seward Municipal Band, whose roots go back to a family band in the late 1870s, still plays free Sunday-evening summer concerts in the historic bandshell on land given so a community band would always have a place to perform.
