About Shell Rock
Shell Rock sits on the river it is named for, on the eastern edge of Butler County where the county line meets Bremer. A post office opened here in 1855, and the town grew up beside the Shell Rock River and its dam. Neighbors still point to the river parks, the bike trail to Clarksville and a 1929 concrete bridge on Cherry Street that made the National Register in 1998. When a Craftsman bungalow on a flood plain was about to be lost, townspeople formed a historical society, moved it to Adair Street in 2006 and opened it as a museum the next summer. Downtown, the Boyd Building has been the home stage of the Shell Rock Music Association since a 1964 show welcoming teachers, and the town likes to say its magic lies in its volunteers. About 1,268 people lived here at the 2020 census.
