About Shelton
Shelton grew from Wood River Centre, where a Mormon pioneer named Joseph Johnson set up on the banks of the Wood River in 1858 and ran a store, blacksmith shop, bakery and print shop for travelers on the Council Bluffs Road; his Huntsman's Echo, started in 1860, was the first newspaper west of Omaha. A stagecoach station followed that same year, then the Union Pacific in 1866, and in 1873 postman Patrick Walsh asked Washington for a new name so mail would stop going astray to Wood River, and the town became Shelton after a railroad auditor, Nathan Shelton. Incorporated in 1882, it built banks, a newspaper and a school, and rancher George Meisner put up a fine Queen Anne home north of town and a Renaissance Revival bank on C Street that today serves as the Shelton Historical Interpretive Center. In 1913 the village won Carnegie money for a library building, and that library joined the National Register in 2024. Through it all Shelton has stayed close to 1,000 people, a village on the old Lincoln Highway between Kearney and Grand Island with its own police and volunteer fire department, a summer pool with a water slide, and the Bulldogs.
