About Shenandoah
Shenandoah began in 1870 as a railroad town called Fair Oaks, laid out just after the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line reached the Nishnabotna country, and it soon took the name of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley because settlers thought the hills looked alike. Seed and nursery men built it: in 1925 Earl May put KMA on the air and rival nurseryman Henry Field answered with KFNF, and their live farm news and country music drew visitors by the thousands to this corner of southwest Iowa. That radio stage gave the Everly family a home from 1945, and young Don and Phil sang on the air before school; their childhood house now sits downtown on West Sheridan Avenue, where Shenfest dedicated it in 2010. Neighbors still pause at the 1912 temperance fountain at Clarinda and Sheridan, stroll the Iowa Walk of Fame through downtown, and set out on the Wabash Trace from the old depot. Today the town of about 4,900 fills its calendar with Market at the Mill, library classes, shows at the Wilson Performing Arts Center and Mustang games.
