About Sigourney
Sigourney began in the summer of 1844, when county clerk S.A. James went looking for the new Keokuk County seat, found a stake the commissioners had driven into the prairie, and built a 12-by-16-foot cabin beside it that served at once as courthouse, office, jail and home. Commissioner Dr. George H. Stone named the town for Lydia Sigourney, a Connecticut poet he admired, and she thanked the county by paying for trees on the courthouse square; her portrait still hangs in the courthouse foyer. The first town lot sold for $12 that fall, log homes went up in 1845, and after the Civil War brick storefronts gradually replaced the wooden ones ringing the square. Its centerpiece is the 1911 Keokuk County Courthouse, a Bedford limestone landmark with Ionic columns and a clock tower, surrounded by a bandstand, a fountain and a Civil War monument, with the 1923 Memorial Hall just off the square. Today about 2,000 people call Sigourney home, where students carry the banner for the Savages, the public library runs programs from its home in a renovated grocery building on Highway 92, and the whole square is on the National Register of Historic Places.
