This week in Sioux Center
About Sioux Center
Sioux Center grew up on the open prairie of northwest Iowa, where Dutch settlers put down roots and, in 1877, raised the town's first church; families came by wagon and used the wagon seats as pews. Rich farmland built the town and still powers it, so grain elevators are the tallest things on the skyline and much of the local work supplies, processes or serves the farms nearby. In 1955 area Christian Reformed churches opened a small college here with about 40 students; it took the name Dordt College the next year and became Dordt University in 2019, and its clock tower is a familiar landmark. At Tower Fields park, Heritage Village keeps more than a dozen old buildings, from a wooden-peg barn to a blacksmith shop and a one-room schoolhouse, and comes alive each September at the Harvest Festival. Today about 8,200 people live here (2020 census), a young and growing town with a strong Hispanic community, the Siouxnami Waterpark and ice arena at the All Seasons Center, and the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra playing in Dordt's B.J. Haan Auditorium.
