About Slater
Slater sits in southern Story County and takes its name from Michael Slater, who owned the land the town was laid out on. A post office opened here in 1887, and the town grew around it into a community of about 1,500 people. Today Slater calls itself the Grand Central Station of Trails, because the High Trestle Trail and the Heart of Iowa Nature Trail meet at its edge. Neighbors gather at Nelson Park, where a log cabin and a stage-and-speaker pavilion host reunions, parties and community days. Heritage Hall on First Avenue keeps the area's stories alive with exhibits and a Thursday open house, and Slater's youngest students learn at Ballard West right in town.
