About Solon
Solon was laid out in 1840 in the rolling country north of Iowa City and named for the lawmaker of ancient Athens. Czech Bohemian families began farming nearby in the 1850s and started Iowa's first Bohemian Catholic parish; their red-brick Saints Peter and Paul church, dedicated in 1917, still stands out in the countryside because former parishioners bought it for a dollar and fixed it up when the parish closed. Just north of town along Highway 1, the old military road, the limestone Stone Academy, thought to date from 1842, is one of the oldest school buildings left in Iowa. Once the railroad reached Solon in 1870, ready-made trim arrived for houses like the little Queen Anne cottage at Rock and Dubuque Streets. Every July since 1971, four civic clubs' one-time party has carried on as Solon Beef Days, when Main Street closes for a parade, bandstand music and steak, and the volunteers have given back more than $385,000 to local causes. Today about 3,000 people call Solon home, a growing small town minutes from the trails and water of Lake Macbride State Park.
