About South Sioux City

South Sioux City grew out of a string of rival river towns, Covington, Stanton and the 1887 town of South Sioux City, that voters joined into one city in 1893 after the Missouri kept rearranging their banks. It sits flat and low right across the water from Sioux City, tied to it by bridges since the 1890s Combination Bridge, which carried trains, streetcars, walkers and wagons alike. Today its life runs along Dakota Avenue, out to the riverside campground at Scenic Park and the 55 donated acres of Siouxland Freedom Park, where neighbors built a half-scale Vietnam Wall after the traveling wall visited in 2007.
