About Spalding
Spalding started in 1875 as Halifax, a settlement of Irish Catholic families on the Nebraska plains, and took its present name in 1881 to honor a bishop. It grew fast, from 148 people in 1900 to 637 ten years later. The Cedar River shaped the place: a diversion dam built in 1923 feeds the old power plant, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and today anchors camping, fishing and a fish bypass built for the river's catfish. Neighbors gather at the City Auditorium for the bi-annual Hee-Haw community play, the Fourth of July weekend, and a New Year's Eve lights tour. Sitting in the Sandhills with about 400 residents, Spalding keeps a library, a clinic, a nine-hole golf course and a Catholic academy.
