About Springville
Springville is named for the large, sparkling springs early settlers found here, and Col. Isaac Butler opened a post office under that name in 1842, only the third in Linn County. On March 22, 1856, Hosea White, Moses P. Wynans, J. P. Hoffman and Joseph S. Butler had surveyor Samuel W. Durham lay out the village on the south side of the creek. When the railroad from Dubuque reached town in 1861 Springville stayed the end of the line until 1864, and new homes and shops grew up around the depot north of the creek, tied to the old village by a bridge that was rebuilt in iron in 1877. By the late 1870s a butter and cheese factory beside the spring was the busiest business in town. A few miles northeast, the 1939 Matsell Bridge, built by the Works Progress Administration, still carries Matsell Park Road over the Wapsipinicon River. Today about 1,150 people call Springville home; they fill the Springville Memorial Library, founded in 1945 and in a new building since 2005, cheer on the Orioles, and turn out each fall for Pumpkin Palooza.
