About St. Edward
St. Edward grew up along Beaver Creek: homesteaders arrived in the Beaver Valley in 1871, built sod houses and dugouts, and picked up their mail at a post office first called Beaver and then Waterville. Surveyors from a South Bend, Indiana land company platted the town site and named it for Father Edward Sorin of Notre Dame, and the town says it is the only St. Edward in the country. Its first business was the Waterville Mills, which ground grain with power from a ten-foot drop in the creek, and when the Union Pacific built a line up from Columbus in 1883, residents who were two people short of the 200 needed to incorporate made the last two from sand and lime, and they have been remembered as the town's "Stone Men" ever since. A dike built in 1884 finally tamed the creek's floods, and the town bought land for a park in 1896, adding a swimming pool in 1929 and a band shell that hosted summer concerts in the park for more than 30 years. Today brick storefronts still line Beaver Street, the K-12 school cheers on the Beavers, and the people who came through floods, tornadoes, blizzards and drought still say the town's spirit is what has never changed.
