About State Center
State Center began in 1864, when the railroad came through and a town took shape near what its founders thought was the middle of Iowa. A century later it found its true calling: in 1958 the Iowa Rose Society, charmed by a village so thick with roses it was practically covered in them, named it the Rose Capital of Iowa, and the town has thrown a Rose Festival ever since. Today the rose garden holds more than 3,000 plants and is accredited by the American Rose Society. Downtown, a Late Victorian grocery built in 1895 still stands on West Main Street; Watson's closed in 1981 with everything left in place and reopened as a museum in 1989 for the whole community to wander through. About 1,400 people live here now, and the Trojans of West Marshall, the school district formed in 1962, give Friday nights their sparkle.
