About Sterling

Sterling was platted in 1870 when the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad reached the Nemaha River valley. Local telling says three settlers flipped a twenty-dollar gold piece for the right to name the place, and William Mann won and chose his Illinois hometown. It grew into the second largest town in Johnson County, about fourteen miles northwest of Tecumseh. Its Broadway storefronts, village park, and the community center on Broadway hold the town's gatherings, from the Sterling Picnic with its car show and street dance to the Ruritans' fall BBQ cookoff. Just south, the Deer Creek Sodbusters hold an antique machinery show every August that the Library of Congress has named a Local Legacy. About 480 people live here, and the Sterling Jets school keeps roughly 200 students from pre-K through twelfth grade.
