About Storm Lake

Storm Lake takes its name from the glacial lake on its southern edge: the favorite telling is of a trapper whose tent was flattened by a fierce overnight storm, and he named the water for it the next morning. Abner Bell, a trapper and hunter, settled here around 1856, and when the railroad arrived in 1870 the town took root on the north shore, incorporating three years later. A Presbyterian college opened in 1891 and grew into Buena Vista University, whose brick Victory Arch survived the 1956 fire that destroyed Old Main and still stands for graduates to walk through. Hmong and Tai Dam refugees made homes here after the Vietnam War, and packing-plant jobs have since drawn families from Latin America and Micronesia, so today the schools hear Spanish, English, Pohnpeian, Karen and Lao, and the Fourth of July brings a Parade of Nations. Families love the lakefront at King's Pointe, the famous trees of the Living Heritage Tree Museum in Sunset Park, and Santa's Castle, where antique animated Christmas figures fill the 1905 Carnegie library.
