About Story City
Folks here first called their settlement Fairview, and when a post office came in 1881 and that name turned out to be taken, the town renamed itself for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story; signs still mark the bounds of Old Fairview each Scandinavian Days. The narrow-gauge railroad reached town in 1878, and Norwegian, Danish and Swedish families who had settled the Skunk River country built the Lutheran churches that once preached in three languages, along with a kitchen tradition of kumla, lefse and krumkake. In 1913 the Commercial Club put up the red-and-buff brick Grand Auditorium and Hotel Block on Broad Street, whose Story Theatre/Grand Opera House still shows movies and stages plays, and that same year a Herschell-Spillman carousel was carved that the community bought for $1,200 in 1938. Restored by hand and sheltered in its own North Park pavilion since 1982, the carousel still spins its horses, pigs and chickens to a Wurlitzer band organ every summer. Today about 3,350 people live in Story City, ten minutes north of Ames on I-35, with a WPA swinging bridge in the river park, the Skunk River canoe trail, Scandinavian Days each June and Yulefest each winter.
