About Strawberry Point
Strawberry Point is said to take its name from a wild strawberry patch at the west end of Main Street, and a post office opened here in the spring of 1854. By 1903 the town had a grand brick hotel at the curve of Elkader and Mission streets, built by local backers to welcome railroad passengers and later highway travelers, and the Franklin Hotel is still taking guests. In the 1960s residents wanted something to draw visitors, so they hoisted a 15-foot fiberglass strawberry onto Commercial Street in June 1967, and it is still the town's roadside celebrity. A few miles southwest lies Backbone State Park, Iowa's first state park, which brings hikers and campers through every summer. Today about 1,150 people live here, and the local school district takes its name, Starmont, from Strawberry Point, Arlington and Lamont combined.
