About Stromsburg
In 1856 a shipload of 155 emigrants left Ockelbo, Sweden, for America, and after some years in Illinois a group of them followed real estate agent Lewis Headstrom west to Nebraska. The rolling prairie reminded them of home, so they named their new town for Stromsburg, a part of Ockelbo. By the early 1880s two local brickyards were turning out the 'native' brick that still shows in the old opera house, now the Viking Center, in storefronts on the square, and in the brick streets that ring it. At the heart of the square park stands a painted two-story Swedish-style building that greets everyone with 'Välkommen.' Since a governor named it the Swede Capital of Nebraska in 1966, the town has kept the title proudly, and each June the Midsommar Swedish Festival fills the square with maypole dances, parades and Swedish food.
