About Stuart
Stuart grew up alongside the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in the late 1860s, and it carries the name of Captain Charles Stuart, who helped steer the line here and laid out the town, which was platted in 1870. The Rock Island made Stuart a division point, with a brick-faced depot finished in 1869, a roundhouse and shops, and across Front Street John Sexton's hotel served people coming off the trains and, later, travelers on the White Pole Road that became U.S. Route 6. In 1910 the Catholic parish finished All Saints, a Byzantine-style church of blue Bedford limestone under a copper dome; after a fire gutted it in 1995, neighbors saved the numbered stones, rebuilt the dome in 2008 and reopened it in 2010 as the Saints Center for Culture and the Arts. The old depot, the last building left from the railroad days, was brought back to its original look by volunteers. Today about 1,780 people call Stuart home, straddling the Guthrie-Adair county line just off Interstate 80, and every June the 'Home of 1,700 Good Eggs and a Few Stinkers' fills downtown and Lawbaugh City Park for Good Egg Days.
