About Sumner
Sumner got its start around 1869, when Chauncey Carpenter laid out a town on the prairie of eastern Bremer County, and a few years later storekeeper Stephen F. Cass hauled his little settlement of Cassville over to join it once it was clear the railroad was coming. The two founders settled on honoring Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner, an anti-slavery leader, rather than either of themselves, and the town incorporated in 1894. Cass's 1897 bank, with its corner clock tower, still anchors downtown after a Rotary-led restoration, and the 1901 brick schoolhouse with its cupola now serves as a museum; both are on the National Register. Townspeople have long pitched in for the place: donations built the library and aquatic center in 2001, and the old Cubs baseball diamond became Cub Park, which keeps growing with community gifts. Today about 2,000 people live here along Highway 93, home to the Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars, a paved trail from City Park to downtown, a nine-hole golf course and Life Line Emergency Vehicles, a big builder of ambulances.
