About Sutherland
Sutherland was platted in October 1891 along the Union Pacific line and took its name from Robert Sutherland, a railroad official; the village incorporated in 1905. Long before that, the Oregon and Mormon trails and the Pony Express crossed this stretch of the Platte valley, and on O'Fallon's Bluff southeast of town iron wagon wheels still mark the ruts that pioneers cut climbing over the bluffs. Downtown faces the historic Lincoln Highway, with the Union Pacific main line just across the road, and a park and pedestrian overpass where hundreds of people pull over when the historic steam locomotive passes. South of town lies the 3,000-acre Sutherland Reservoir, a WPA project from 1934, with fishing, boating and the Oregon Trail Golf Course on its north shore. Today about 1,300 people call Sutherland home; they cheer for the Sailors, borrow books at the Maxine White Public Library, and fill the stands each Fourth of July for a rodeo that draws a thousand or more fans a night.
