About Sutton
Sutton was laid out in 1871, when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad pushed its line to this spot on the Clay County prairie, and it borrowed its name from Sutton, Massachusetts. What started as a railroad depot grew into a farm and industry town, and many families here can trace their roots back to the people who built it. One of those founders, Isaac Newton Clark, a former teacher and Union veteran, built a Gothic Revival house on West Cedar Street around 1877 that still stands and is on the National Register. Downtown runs along Saunders Avenue, Highway 6 passes through town, and the Sutton Museum preserves the town's artifacts and history. About 1,450 people live here today, and they turn out for Dugout Days each June, with a parade and carnival, and for the lighted Parade of Lights downtown in December.
