About Syracuse

Syracuse borrowed its name from Syracuse, New York, in the hope that a salt find in the 1850s would turn into the same kind of trade; the salt never paid, but the name stuck. The railroad came through around 1871, and the town grew into a busy shipping point for Otoe County grain and livestock, slowly climbing from the bottomland by the tracks to higher ground. Today it sits where Highways 2 and 50 cross, about halfway between Lincoln and Nebraska City, with original brick on the downtown streets, a museum in an 1881 church, and a German heritage festival every July.
