This week in Tama
About Tama
Tama took shape in 1862, when the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad pushed through this stretch of Tama County, and the young town took its name from Taimah, a Meskwaki leader of the 1800s. A few miles away lies the Meskwaki Settlement, and Tama is home to the headquarters of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa. When the Lincoln Highway came through, local boosters paid for something no one forgets: a little 1914 bridge over Mud Creek on East 5th Street whose concrete railings spell out LINCOLN HIGHWAY, now on the National Register. Down the same road, the King Tower stop opened in 1937 as a Spanish Colonial Revival gas station and cafe, with tourist cabins added the next year, and the cafe still serves under its 1950s wall murals. Today about 3,130 people live in Tama, cheering on the South Tama County Trojans and gathering for story time and coffee with friends at the Hink Tama Public Library on Siegel Street.
