About Terrytown
Terrytown got its start in 1949, when Scottsbluff businessman Terry Carpenter founded a new village on the other side of the North Platte River and set up his businesses there, from a radio station to restaurants. In the 1950s his Terry's Arena was the area's big night out, a roller rink that was then the largest arena in the state and drew stars like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, while the Carena Drive-In nearby had room for 600 cars. The arena burned in July 1968 and the drive-in is gone now too, but the town Carpenter built still sits snug between Scottsbluff and Gering. Today about 1,057 people live here, and families gather at Carpenter Park beside Terry's Lake and at Hascall Park, where the playground comes with a grand view of Scotts Bluff National Monument. Kids go to Gering Public Schools and cheer for the Bulldogs, and since 2018 the Tri-City Roadrunner buses have connected the town to its neighbors.
