About Tilden
The first families reached this stretch of the Elkhorn River valley in the fall of 1868, and when the railroad built a depot here in 1880 a village called Burnett grew up right on the line between Madison and Antelope counties. Mail kept getting mixed up with Bennet, so in 1887 the Post Office renamed the town Tilden, though old-timers went on saying Burnett until the council made the change official by ordinance. Farms and livestock built the place, its creamery became known for dairy from the surrounding farms, and by 1919 Tilden had passed a thousand people and become a city. Hall of Fame center fielder Richie Ashburn was born here, and the ball field in the heart of downtown, next to the pool and playground, carries his name. Today about 1,000 people call Tilden home: the old Chicago and North Western line is now the Cowboy Trail, the brick storefronts of Second Street face the Tilden Bank, Elkhorn Valley School cheers on the Falcons, and every July Prairie Days brings a parade, a street dance, a pie eating contest and a quilt show.
