About Tipton
Tipton was laid out in 1840 by Henry W. Higgins, who named it for his friend General John Tipton, and a year later it took over as the seat of Cedar County, building its first courthouse on a square saved for it in the town plan. For three decades the railroads kept passing Tipton by, until a branch line finally connected it and the first train pulled in on Thanksgiving Day, 1872. Its 1903 Carnegie library still stands on Cedar Street and holds a treasured collection of original Grant Wood art, and a block from the courthouse square sits the old brick sheriff's house and jail, a 'Mom and Pop' jail where the sheriff's family lived and cooked for inmates until it closed in 2001. In 1931 the farms around town were the center of the Iowa Cow War, a story the county historical museum still tells. Today about 3,150 people call Tipton home, gathering for Thursday farmers' markets on the square, Ridiculous Days each August, and the Parade of Lights every December, often with a famous Tipton Bakery crescent in hand.
