About Toledo
Toledo was laid out in 1853 to be the seat of the brand-new Tama County, borrowing its name from Toledo, Ohio, and it became an incorporated city in 1866, the same year its red-brick Romanesque courthouse with the square clock tower was finished. The county's 1870 jail nearby, where the sheriff's family once lived upstairs, is now the Tama County Historical Museum, and just south on Broadway the volunteer Hope Fire Company built itself a rare Moorish Revival firehouse, crowned with a corner tower and a sunburst pediment. In 1912 Ella Wieting gave the town a brick opera house in memory of her husband, and since 1960 a volunteer guild has kept the Wieting Theatre showing movies most weekends and putting local players on its stage. Each July neighbors fill the courthouse square for the Stoplight Festival, built around the historic signal at High Street and Broadway, and a cow-and-calf sculpture near Highway 63 honors hometown sculptor Norma "Duffy" Lyon, the Iowa State Fair's Butter Cow Lady. Today about 2,370 people call Toledo home, gathering for story time at the library on East High Street and sharing South Tama County schools and a gravel recreation trail with neighboring Tama.
