About Trenton

Trenton began as a railroad town: when the Burlington line pushed west in 1885 the depot went up on flatter ground a quarter mile from the older trail-era settlement, and by the next January about 160 people had arrived. After three county elections, and a famously hot-tempered night in October 1893 when Trenton men carried the county records home from Culbertson, it became the Hitchcock County seat. The 1935 'butte to butte' flood and the 1949 dam that created Swanson Reservoir reshaped the town, and the new lake now draws boaters and anglers. Locals point to the 1921 Weyl Service Station, now part of the Hitchcock County Museum, the library in a 1906 building, and Massacre Canyon just east of town. Roughly 500 residents cheer on the Falcons and gather at the TCDC Community Building.
