About University Heights
University Heights is a one-quarter-square-mile city tucked entirely inside Iowa City, close enough to the football stadium that you can nearly hear the game from the sidewalk. Around 1920 two brothers, Lee and George Koser, started buying up old West Lucas Township farmland, betting that the university would grow west across the Iowa River. The bet paid off once the university's General Hospital opened in 1928 and the stadium in 1929, and the city was incorporated in 1935. Most of the lots west of Sunset Street were built out by the 1960s, and the surrounding land had been annexed by Iowa City, so the town stayed small and tidy. Today about 1,200 neighbors live on its shady streets, making it the most densely populated city in Iowa, with Melrose Triangle and a modest city hall as its little landmarks.
