About Valentine
Valentine grew up beside the railroad in 1882 and 1883 and took its name from Congressman Edward K. Valentine, and it has leaned into the name ever since: a big red neon heart glows on the pine-covered canyon wall at the north end of Main Street, and every February mail pours into the post office to be sent back out with a Valentine postmark. Just south of town the Niobrara cuts through limestone cliffs, birch and pine, and paddlers come from all over to float its National Scenic River stretch past waterfalls and the bison of Fort Niobrara refuge. All around lie the Sandhills of Cherry County, Nebraska's largest county, and the town still calls itself a cattle town at heart, bringing bulls right onto Main Street for the Heart City Bull Bash.
