About Valparaiso
Valparaiso sits in the Oak Creek Valley, and its Spanish name, 'vale of paradise,' fits the rolling Bohemian Alps around it. The place shows up on an 1863 map as the seat of the old Calhoun County, and pioneer Andrew Johnson soon ran a post office from his home and later his store. When the Union Pacific arrived in 1876-77 and made the village a junction for three branch lines, complete with an engine house, Valparaiso filled with mills, elevators, hotels, shops and even an opera house, incorporating in 1880 and reaching 614 people by 1900. The rails are gone now, but the old Union Pacific corridor lives on as the Oak Creek Trail, and the library welcomes readers inside the 1907 Oak Creek Valley Bank, original vaults and all. Today about 600 neighbors gather at the Village Square gazebo, Caboose Park and Tornado Park, celebrate Val Days each summer, and send their youngest to Valparaiso Elementary in the Raymond Central district.
