About Van Meter
Van Meter was laid out in 1869 along the Raccoon River and took its name from the Van Meter family, Dutch settlers whose roots trace to Meteren in the Netherlands; the town incorporated in 1877. A wooden Rock Island depot with a brick platform once greeted trains here. In the fall of 1903 newspapers told of a winged, glowing creature over Main Street, and today the town leans into the legend with an annual Visitor Festival of walking tours and talks. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller, nicknamed the Heater from Van Meter, was born here in 1918, and the museum built for him in 1995 became City Hall in 2015. The town has more than doubled in size since 2000, reaching 1,484 people in 2020, with a lot of young families and a school that anchors it.
