About Verdigre
Verdigre was platted in July 1887 by George Quimby in the Verdigris Valley, settled by Bohemian families, and it took its name from the nearby creek just before the railroad arrived. Among its first neighbors was Old Jules Sandoz, father of the author Mari Sandoz. By 1912 it had a fire department, two hotels, an opera house, a flour mill and an ice cream factory, and two landmarks from those years still stand on Main Street: the 1900 Commercial Hotel, now a bed-and-breakfast, and the 1903 Z.C.B.J. Opera House, still the community auditorium. The village calls itself the Kolach Capital of the World, and its Czech pride shows every June at Kolach Days, run by the Improvement Club. About 550 people live here, sharing Chalupnik Park on Main Street and the camping, cabins and ballfields of Wildwood Acres.
