About Villisca
Villisca began as a spot called The Forks, where the creeks met, and was laid out as a town in 1858 by pioneer D. N. Smith. It became an incorporated town in September 1869 and has kept a square at its center ever since. Neighbors raised their own money to build a National Guard armory, finished in 1913, and then used it for community gatherings and as the high school gym until 1959. Today that brick hall is on the National Register of Historic Places, and a Carnegie library has served readers on Third Avenue since the early 1900s. About 1,100 people live here now, kids head to the Southwest Valley schools, and the Community Betterment Association keeps Heritage Days, the Easter egg hunt and the Santa visit going.
