About Vinton
Vinton started out in 1849 as a river trading post called Northport, set beside a grove of tall cedars on the Cedar River, and it grew into the place where Benton County farm families came to sell their crops and stock up. When the railroad reached town in 1869 the city incorporated, and canneries followed; the Iowa Canning Company's seed house is remembered as the first corn canning operation west of the Mississippi. Generations of Iowans also know Vinton as the longtime home of the state's school for blind students, the campus where Mary Ingalls, sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder, studied. Downtown, the 1906 Benton County Courthouse lifts its 112-foot clock tower over the square, a few blocks from the 1904 Carnegie library and the brick 1900 depot that the county historical society turned into a railroad museum. Vintage-style street lamps earned Vinton its nickname, the City of Lights, and Celebration Park, opened on the riverfront in 2014 after the 2008 flood, now hosts concerts, weddings and festivals against the Cedar.
